Surrey Schools 2025-2026: A Year in Review

Click to see full-size version.As a new school year begins, we're taking a moment to look back at what Surrey Schools accomplished between September 2025 and June 2026. 

Our work was guided by Learning by Design, the vision behind Surrey Schools' Strategic Plan, and by its five priorities. 

Literacy and Numeracy are the foundation for thinking skills, and for the fifth straight year our Grade 10 students exceeded the provincial average, with 72% proficient or extending on the Literacy Assessment.

Student Transitions matter because the move into and through high school is where students most need extra care. That's why 25 schools took part in Sacred Ties, an Indigenous transition to high school program, and why 87% of our students graduated with a Dogwood, above the provincial average.

Under Student Well-being, we know students can't learn if their basic needs aren't met and they don't feel they belong, so we served more than 2,300 breakfasts and 5,000 lunches every day, and over 950 students helped shape decisions through student voice forums and conversations. While 77% of students told us they feel safe at school, matching the provincial average, we want that number to continue to grow.

For Indigenous Student Success and Reconciliation, we listened to Indigenous families and communities and acted on what we heard. Indigenous graduation rates have risen 13% in the last four years, 420 students took part in the Skookum Windspeaker Program, and 92 students and families joined Indigenous Family Wellness evenings.

Our Racial Equity work asks every part of the district to take part: 7,676 staff completed racial equity and anti-racism training, and 1,330 students joined Equity Clubs, so that every student sees themselves respected at school.

All of this happened while we kept growing, adding 1,455 seats, opening a new school, and welcoming 2,637 new families and hundreds of new teachers and support workers.
